This summer second year PhD student, Justin Schumacher, had the opportunity to intern at Novartis in the department of Preclinical Safety. The primary focus of the internship was to work on a project in respiratory toxicology and immunotoxicology, areas of research that correspond to Justin’s own thesis work at Rutgers. This project culminated into a manuscript aimed to be published later in 2016. During this internship, Justin was able to experience the role of toxicology in drug development first hand. He was also able to network with key scientists in other departments to better learn how the many departments of Novartis coordinate with each other in the drug development process.
