My project utilizes stem cell-derived neurons, the only way of studying human neurons, to explore the mechanistic interactions between APOE and DDT and how they can synergistically enhance the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by increasing hallmarks of AD. A better understanding of this can provide insight to the pathogenesis of AD which can ultimately lead to […]

2019 Society of Toxicology meeting held in Baltimore, MD
Exposures to engineered nanomaterials and ultra fine particulate air pollution are associated with early pregnancy loss or reduced fetal growth. Here we sought to evaluate whether exposure to nano-sized particles during pregnancy led to the generation of an exaggeratedly hypoxic environment within the utero-placental unit, contributing to the fetal growth restriction observed. These ex […]

. G protein-coupled receptor signaling regulates many human airway smooth muscle (HASM) functions which are levels often associated with bronchodilator therapy for obstructive lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The G protein signaling network modulates airway smooth muscle relaxation through the β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR), Gs, and adenylyl cyclase axis. Our previous studies […]

“My research focuses on a particular compound used in fire protection – organophosphate flame retardants (OPFR). Human exposure to OPFR has health concerns due to their endocrine disruption capacity through interactions with endogenous hormone receptors that regulate energy homeostasis. Our research has shown OPFR cause sex-dependent disruptions of energy balance in adult mice.”
Learning Safety Testing from the Experts
In Spring 2019, scientists from Novartis conducted the “Safety Assessment of Pharmaceuticals” elective class for JGPT students and postdocs. This hands-on course provides real-world scenarios and data that are encountered in drug development. Topics covered included Safety Pharmacology, Imaging and Pathology, Carcinogenicity, Metabolites, Investigative Safety, and more. JGPT students benefit from the strong ties between […]
JGPT hosts 1st Rutgers Risk Assessment Boot Camp
On Jan 10-11, 2019, the first annual Boot Camp for Risk Assessment was held in the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute at Rutgers University. Over the two days, the lecture topics included risk analysis, systematic review, data quality, weight of evidence, hazard identification, susceptible populations, exposure pathways, point-of-departure, reference values, and more. Case studies […]
Postdoc Cody Smith Participates in Intensive Data Carpentry Workshop
I recently participated in the Genomics Workshop taught by Data Carpentry and offered through Rutgers iJOBS. Data Carpentry’s aim is to teach researchers basic concepts, skills, and tools for working with data so they can get more done in less time, and with less pain. This particular workshop taught data management and analysis techniques for […]
Where Does the JGPT Take You?
On Jan 18, 2019, JGPT alumni provided an overview of multiple job sectors within toxicology. Four speakers provided highlights of their former and current positions, advice for students, and answered questions from attendees. Dr. Brian Wall, Research Scientist, Colgate-Palmolive Company Dr. Allison Isola, Advanced Toxicologist, Exxonmobil Biomedical Sciences, Inc Dr. Justin Schumacher, Research Investigator […]
Finding the next generation of toxicologists at the 2018 ABRCMS meeting
Two JGPT trainees, Talia Planas-Fontánez and Dr. Cody Smith, attended the 2018 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. With over 2,300 undergraduate attendees, ABRCMS aims to shape tomorrow’s diverse STEM leaders. Talia and Cody shared their experiences in graduate and post-graduate education in toxicology as well judged research competitions […]
Rutgers Trainees Shine at Local Toxicology Conference
The MidAtlantic Society of Toxicology (MASOT) meeting was held on Oct 24, 2018 in Edison, NJ. Rutgers Ph.D. students won the top awards at the meeting. Top poster honors were awarded to Ludwik Gorczyca (1st Place), Jennifer Schaefer (2nd Place) and Kyle Saitta (3rd Place) for their outstanding research presentations.
